Let x be the number of the broken apple.
(1000-x)*4=3984
       1000-x=996
                  x=4
There are 4 apples are broken.

Let x be the cost of the trousers.
x+(x-70)=450
    2x-70=450
          2x=520
            x=260
The trousers cost $260.
